What Would Change?
Governance & Representation
- The Village Council (mayor and councillors) would cease to exist.
- The Village of Sayward's area would become an "electoral area" or similar in the Strathcona Regional District, represented by an SRD electoral director.
- Local bylaws currently set by the Village would be replaced or aligned by SRD regional policies.
Services & Infrastructure
- Municipal services (water, sewer, roads, recreation centres, etc) would become part of the SRD's portfolio or be administrered in a new manner.
- The tax structure may change: property taxes would be adjusted to reflect SRD's broader budgeting and cost allocations.
- Some localized control could be lost, but potentially offset by reduced administrative overhead.
Financial Implications
- Potential savings through economies of scale in administration.
- The province also offers restructure assistance grants (for costs associated with implementation) and implementation grants to help local governments transition.
- Community identity & autonomy: The Village loses its independent municipal identity.
- Local decision making authority may be reduced.
- On the other hand: some residents believe this could reduce conflict and stabilize governance.
